With reference to your letter of the 12th December

and to the letter from this department of the same date, on the subject of delays in the mails from Canton, I am directed

by Viscount Halifax to inform you that the British United Press report which you mention would appear to be correct, but that no official representations have yet been made by His Majesty's Government to the Japanese Government in this matter. His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton is of the opinion that no useful purpose would at the moment be served by such a protest and according to his latest information it would appear that arrangements are being made to send mail between Hong Kong and Canton via Macao and that it is hoped to arrange such a

service at regular intervals.
